1 Timothy ch 6 v 1 - 11
To Servants. 6 v 1,2. The context and the comparison is with I Pet 2 V 18 and suggest that two classes of masters are here dealt with: the believing and the unbelieving.
Paul does not discuss the ultimate question of the right and wrong of slavery, but stresses the responsibilities resting on the slave, and the opportunity even in that situation to "adorn the doctrine" (Titus 2 v 10) The character of God and the Gospel teaching will be hurt by wrong conduct.
And those who have believing masters are not to fail to give full honour, but are to serve them all the better, since it is a Christian brother who is devoting himself to (or benefiting by) good service.
V 2-15. Give a solemn charge to believers.
These things teach and exhort. This is a basic theme in the Pastoralletters,
Right teaching was the main reason for leaving Timothy at Ephesus ch. 1 v 3 .
V 3-5. Warnings Against False Teachers.
Wholesome words, Healthy, sound, because they promote health.
This expression is emphasizing Paul's plea for sound doctrine.
Even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This is another indication that written Gospel narratives were well known and in circulation.
And to the doctrine, , since the words of Christ are the basis and substance of the doctrine which agrees with godliness
V 4. He is proud. Used three times in the NT, all three occurring in the Pastoral letters (I Tim 3 v 6; 6 v 4; II Tim 3 v 4).
The word combines the ideas of pride and folly. The rejection of all the evidence of the Gospel is rooted in pride and is the utmost folly.
Knowing nothing. This is the only time Paul uses this word meaning "to understand."
Doting. The word is literally "sick," "ailing"; having a morbid craving for controversy and for disputes about words
Surmising’s. Suspicions, speculations or guesses.
V 5. Supposing that gain is godliness. Supposing that godliness is a way of gain
From such withdraw thyself.
V 6. Great gain, This word appears to have the meaning of a, "way of gain," "means of livelihood," which yields a better sense here.
Paul means to say:
"The Christian faith with sufficiency for this life is a mighty way of gain." He has already said that godliness is profitable in every respect, giving the promise not only for this life but also for the life to come.
It is this Christian teaching which Paul now is to stress in the rest of the epistle.
V 7,8 the apostle shows the folly of setting one's hopes and desires on this world which is temporary.
One should be content with food and raiment.
V 9,10 he develops the thought of the folly of concentrating on the accumulation of wealth as an end in itself.
Which (referring to money)
while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith. Love of money is idolatry (Col 3 v 5; Eph 5 v 5; I Jn 2 v 15) and leads away from the true hope of the Christian.
What are the Motives of the Man of God. v ll-15a.
Paul now outlines the things a Christian should be cherishing. Central is the life to come and the return of Christ.
V 11. Follow after righteousness. Pursue, and keep pursuing.
Vigor and intensity are suggested both in fleeing things that lead from the faith and in pursuing things pertaining to the faith.
Paul has a striking number of these suggestive lists of virtues, no two
identical and none exhaustive of the possibilities of the "weightier matters of the law."
Righteousness may be thought of as a comprehensive name for all the fruit of the Spirit.
Godliness means "godly faith," "true religion."
Faith may mean "believing" or "faithfulness."
A full realization of love means the experience of God's love for us, as well as our loving him and others.
Patience means "endurance," and
meekness seems to go back to the Lord's teaching and example (Matthew 5 v 5; 11 v 29).
