June 22nd 2025 Titus ch 2
2 v 1.-10. The instruction of this chapter is addressed to Titus directly in verses 1,7,8,15; but through Titus Paul was instructing the whole church of Crete.
His central theme is sound doctrine applied, resulting in good works.
V 1) the instruction to Titus was the primary responsibility to preach and teach the truth, that which was in line with sound doctrine
The use of this word in the Pastorals, always in connection with doctrine, shows Paul's emphasis on correct teaching.
v. 2, To the aged men ,· who were actually or potentially teachers, life and doctrine were to stand together. This is an important consideration with each of these classes of people.
V 3 To the aged and young women (v. 3-5) considerable emphasis is placed on the foundation of the home. The details are a suggestion ofwords in Prov 31 v 10-31.
The honour of the Word of God is the supreme approval for right conduct.
V 6 To the young men (vv. 6-8) the key feature singled out for emphasis is sober mindedness or discretion, as in the case of young women ,·.
The same emphasis is seen in the encouragements to young men in Proverbs 1 v 4; 2 v 11; 3 v 21;
To Titus himself the apostle gives the appropriate warning for a young man and minister v 7 & 8.
There is a constant challenge of properly instructing unbelievers is included here
V 9 To the servants (vv. 9.10) here three common faults are singled out: 1 ..answering back, 2..contradicting or disputing; and 3…, stealing
Fidelity this is the word frequently used for faith in the NT.
Paul represents the whole section, indeed the entire epistle, when he points out that good works show the doctrine of God our Saviour.
James said that faith (doctrine) without (good) works is dead, just as the body without spirit is dead also.
It is a wonderful thought, that our good works show the testimony of our God
Paul now turns to GRACE
V 11 Grace is always the great key word in salvation.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation "saving grace."
It appeared in Jesus Christ all men can be saved by the death and resurrection of Jesus, {His shed blood}
All God's promises and saving work from the beginning of the race have revealed his grace, all his blessings and gifts have been designed to lead men to repentance
V 12. Teaching us. Grace saves, but also teaches and trains in sober and godly living.
Denying ungodliness. The same strong decisive rejection of the world
Soberly, righteously, and godly. These three words skillfully repeatthe theme of all the Pastoral epistles.
In this present world. These words show the basic direction of Paul's thought - life consists of this world, as well as the world to come.
V 13. Looking for that blessed hope Paul expresses the rest of the thought by the great event of the world to come: the coming of Christ.
Hope ... appearing is one idea, the blessed hope and appearing of God
Saviour Jesus Christ" Again two ideas form one thought much as do the compound divine names of the OT.
V 14. Who gave himself for us. The atonement has both the particular reference to the elect and the universal reference to all
He might redeem. Ransom us or deliver us by payment of a price
Deliverance from an ungodly walk.
The peculiar mark of God's people appears their zeal for good works.
Peculiar is used in the LXX of Ex 19: 5.
This and the word translated "peculiar" in 1Pet 2 V 9 both imply a possession or purchase.
Good works are the fruit of the Spirit the seal of God's ownership. '
15. These things speak. The grace of God is the basis of good works, but it is essential for the minister continually to proclaim this grace, encouraging and reproving, with the authority of God's Word.
Let not our ministry be such as would give men reason to despise us.
