November 9th 2025 Zechariah chapter 2
Vision of the Surveyor.
V 1. A man with a measuring line. From the likeness of the other visions this is probably an angel in human form. He is not the Angel of the Lord, for he is chosen more precisely than that one usually is, and with fuller mention ( Ezekiel 40 v 3; Rev 11 v 1,2 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. V 2 But the court which is outside the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
V 2. Whither goest thou? The prophet's question gives him the knowledge that the man with the measuring line is intended to measure the city of Jerusalem to determine its exact dimensions.
This does not mean that the city of Jerusalem 'was completely restored at that time.
It was being surveyed with a view to completion of that task.
V 3. Another angel went out to meet him. In order that Zechariah may give the intended message to the people, the interpreting angel goes to receive the message from another angel delegated for that purpose. (Red horse angel)
V 4. As towns without walls. Zechariah is informed that Jerusalem will be so enlarged that it will spread beyond its bounds. Because of the multiplication of men and cattle in her, she will be inhabited as villages without walls.
Jerusalem is to experience a population explosion unparalleled in her history. For dwelling safely without walls, they will need Gods protection see I Sam 6 v 18; Esther 9 v 19; Ezekiel 38 v 39.
This population increase did not follow the return from exile; it is related to the distant day mentioned in the next verse.
V 5. A wall of fire. Tangible walls would be lacking in Jerusalem, but the Lord himself would be as an impenetrable wall of fire for her protection.
The glory in the midst of her. But protection is only part of Israel’s need.
The return of the Shekinah glory is promised here.
The spiritual needs of the nation will be met with the return of that Shekinah glory which Ezekiel saw depart from the city. This prophecy waits fulfilment in the Millennial day (Ezekiel 11 v 23; Hab 2 v 14).
V 6. Flee from the land of the north. Some of the exiled Jews, because of the infirmities of age and for other reasons, had chosen to remain in Babylon.
The Lord now urgently insisted that they were to flee the doomed city.
Calamity was again to fall upon that wicked city of Babylon
As the four winds of the heaven. They were scattered not to all quarters of the globe, but with great force, as though by means of the four winds.
V 8. After the glory hath He sent me. The glory can hardly refer to the time of glory in verse 5, for in that case more particulars would have been given, as in other references this is to time of blessing to come.
Additionally, God will bring judgment on Israel's enemies after he comes to dwell in Jerusalem,
The verse means, that God will send the Messiah for the proof of His glory by dealing with the nations who have oppressed Israel. Israel is The apple of his eye. The pupil of the eye is most tender, easily injured, irreplaceable, and carefully protected. So is Israel in God's sight.
V 9. I will shake mine hand upon them. With this threatening gesture (Isaiah 11 v 15) And the LORD will utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.
God will reverse the condition of Israel, so that their masters will become their servants.
V 10. Lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee. Zion's joy will be complete in the return of her Messiah in His visible appearing (9 v 9; Malachi 3 v 1).
V 11. Many nations shall be joined to the Lord. In the hour of his power and glory Messiah will draw many nations to Himself.
I will dwell in the midst of thee. For the third time in this chapter Zecheriah declares that Messiah will dwell in the midst of His people ( 8 V 20-23).
V 12. The Lord shall inherit Judah. The fact that many nations will be blessed in the Lord it will not detract from Israel's glory.
Israel will continue to be the heritage of the Lord, and the Holy City will still be a place of His abode.
V 13 He is raised up out of His holy habitation. When the Lord is silent in human affairs, it is as though He were asleep.
That is why people go their own ways
In His intervention, He is likened to a man awaking to action, or a lion roused from his lair.
